Born on November 22, 1984 in Maracaibo, Zulia (Venezuela), Yusmeiro Petit (Yusmeiro Alberto Petit) played for the Florida Marlins for his entire 1 year career. Petit broke into the bigs on May 14, 2006 with the Florida Marlins.
A highly-touted prospect out of the New York Mets organization, Petit managed to rack up extraordinarily high strikeout rates—130 Ks in 117.7 IP as a 20 year old in AA, for example—despite lacking an overpowering fastball. To scouts, this oddity was intriguing; so intriguing, in fact, that Petit has twice been the centerpiece prospect in a trade. First, he was traded by the Mets, with Mike Jacobs and Grant Psomas, to the Florida Marlins for Carlos Delgado. A year later, the Fish flipped him to the Arizona Diamondbacks for erratic closer Jorge Julio.
