Biography[]

Wily Mo Pena (Wily Modesto Pena) was born on January 23, 1982 in Laguna Salada, Valverde (Dominican Republic). He made his Major League debut on September 10, 2002 for the Cincinnati Reds. In 2003, his rookie year, he hit .218 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI. Pena played for the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 5 year career.

Pena made it to the majors at the age of 20 because of the major league contract that the New York Yankees gave him. His game has several large flaws that a couple more years in the minors could correct, but he is out of options and is in the big leagues for good. He has some serious power and could easily hit 40 home runs a year if given an every day job, but he strikes out a lot and looks downright foolish at times when flailing at good breaking balls. In the outfield he can cover a lot of ground, but he gets bad breaks and doesn't always take the most direct route to the ball.

Pena spent 3 years in a crowded Cincinati Reds outfield before the Reds sent him to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for fan favorite, Bronson Arroyo. Now in Boston he hopes to find enough playing time to be able to work through his flaws at the major league level.

Most people believe that Wily Mo Pena's best season was 2004, when he slugged 26 home runs and knocked in 66 runs.
