Biography[]Steve Yzerman was drafted, aged 19, by the Detroit Red Wings in 1983, and was an immediate success. He scored 87 points in his rookie season, and impressed everyone with his leadership, perhaps moreso than his ability. Yzerman then scored 89 points the following year. Yzerman was selected Captain of the Detroit Red Wings in 1986, a position he holds to this day. At 21, he had become the youngest captain in NHL history. He is currently the longest serving captain of any NHL team ever. Between 1987 and 1993, Yzerman came into his own as a point scorer. He scored 50 goals or more in five of those six seasons. He scored more than 100 points in each. His best season was 1988-89, when he scored 65 goals and 90 assists for 155 points. This is the highest number of points scored in a season ever, whose name is not Gretzky, or Lemieux. 1997-98 saw Yzerman dip below a point per game for the first time in his career (other than the 1994-95 lockout season). Since 2000, Yzerman has been dogged with injury problems, yet has continued to play for his beloved Wings. Yzerman has won three Stanley Cups with Detroit, and was a key contributor to the Wings' rivalry with the Colorado Avalanche. He is so popular, that even Colorado Avalanche fans have respect for him. Aged 41 this year, all things suggest that 2005-06 will be his final season in the NHL. He is a shoe-in to get into the Hockey Hall of Fame as soon as he is eligible. If he retires at the end of this season, the Red Wings are likely to retire the Number 19 jersey in his honour. In his career, he has played 1,514 games, scored 692 goals, 1,063 assists, totalling 1,755 points. Those statistics put him up with the legends of the game. Yet, Yzerman is not about statistics. He played the game for the fun and enjoyment of it. He remains a true ambassador not just for Hockey, but for any professional sportsman.
