Biography[]

Roberto Walker Clemente was born August 18, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico and played his entire Hall of Fame career in rightfield with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was very helpful in his native land and in other Latin American countries, often delivering baseball supplies and food to them. He died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972 while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. His body was never recovered. He was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973 as the first Hispanic American to be selected, and the only exception to the mandatory five-year post-retirement waiting period since it was instituted in 1954. He is well-known for being the only player to have ever scored a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam.

Most people believe that Roberto Clemente's best season was 1966, when he slugged 29 home runs, hit for a .317 average and knocked in 119 runs.
