- Fred Merkle of the New York Giants had 6 RBI in a 19-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets scored 13 runs in the 1st inning.

- Jim Tobin, the pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, hit 3 home runs in a game. He was the first pitcher to accomplish that feat.

- First ever Formula One Grand Prix, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The race is won by Giuseppe Farina driving an Alfa Romeo.

- Willie Mays and Darryl Spencer, both of the New York Giants each hit two homeruns and a triple in the same game.

- Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals doubled off of Moe Brabowsky in the 6th inning of a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. The double made Musial the 8th player in major league history to accumulate 3000 hits.

- George Brett went 3-4 in game in which the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 13-2. It was the 6th straight game in which Brett had 3 hits.

- With a 5-0 win over the Houston Astros, the Chicago Cubs won their 8,000th game.

- Reggie Jackson became the first major leaguer to strike out 2000 times

- Carlton Fisk became the 5th catcher in major league history to steal 100 bases.
- Trailing 8-1 after 5 innings, the New York Yankees go on to beat the Minnesota Twins 9-8. The winning runs came on a 3 run shot by Don Mattingly in the bottom of the 9th.

- Ajax draws Nil-Nil with Torino at the Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam in the second leg of the UEFA Cup Final. The first leg ended drawn 2-2, Ajax won the UEFA Cup on the away goals rule.

- George Brett hits his 300th homerun (off of Mark Clark) in a game in which the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians, 7-3. Brett is just the 6th player in major league history to have at least 300 home runs and 3000 hits.

- California Angels outfielder, Tim Salmon ties an AL record with his 13th straight hit.
- Mark Clark pitches a 6 hit shutout for the Cleveland Indians in a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. The win would start an 18 game winning streak for the Indians.

- O.J. Simpson appeared on British TV to discuss his not guilty verdict.

- Eddie Murray went 2-3 for the Anaheim Angels in an 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox. The game was Murray's 6,000th, making him the 6th player in major league history to reach that mark.

- Alex Rodriguez becomes the 5th youngest player to hit his 200th career home run.

- Jon Lieber of the Philadelphia Phillies has his perfect game broken up by a 7th inning single off the bat of Adam Dunn. Lieber allowed just two hits over 8.2 IP to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0. Lieber's ERA dropped more than a run after the game, going from 6.60 to 5.50
- The Atlanta Braves score 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th off Washington Nationals closer, Chad Cordero, to beat them 8-5. The night was capped off with a grandslam by struggling sophomore, Jeff Francoeur
