Biography[]

Born on Feb. 20, 1983 in Manakin-Sabot, Va., Justin Verlander (Justin Brooks Verlander) has played for the Detroit Tigers for his entire MLB career. Verlander broke into the bigs on July 4, 2005 with the Detroit Tigers, putting up a 3.63 ERA in 186 innings pitched in 2006, his rookie year, as his team went to the World Series. On June 12, 2007, Verlander pitched a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Verlander was named to the American League All-Star Team in 2007 and 2009. He signed a five-year contract extension with the Tigers on Feb. 4, 2010.

For three years, Verlander starred at Old Dominion University, where in 2002 he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. In 2003 and 2004, Verlander was a First Team All-CAA selection; he struck out 427 batters in his collegiate career, setting a school and CAA record.

Verlander's accomplishments in college earned him a place on the CAA's 25th Anniversary Team in January 2010.

Trivia[]

  • Verlander's no-hitter was the first ever at Comerica Park, which opened in 2000. It was also the first no-hitter thrown by a Tiger pitcher since Jack Morris in 1984.
  • Verlander is the only pitcher in MLB history to throw a no-hitter, start a World Series game, get voted as Rookie of the Year, and become an All-Star in his first two full seasons.
