  • Zip Zabel, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs goes 18.1 IP for the 4-3 win in a 19 inning game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the longest relief appearance in major league history.

1943

  • Joe Cronin, the player/manager for the Boston Red Sox becomes the first player to hit a pinch-hit home run in both games of a double header.

1958

  • Eleven days after making his major league debut, Ossie Virgil, the first black player to play for the Detroit Tigers, goes 5-5 in his first home game at Briggs Stadium. He helps the Tigers beat the Washington Senators, 9-2.

  • Willie Mays and Ernie Banks become the first pair of players with 500 career homers to hit a home run in the same game. Mays hit his 615th and Banks hit his 504th

  • Baseball owners vote in favor of expanding the playoffs and the divisions by a vote of 26-2. The new allignment, set to start in 1994 would feature 3 divisions in each league and allow 8 teams to make it to the playoffs in the format that we now know today.

2003

  • The Philadelphia Phillies sign a 25 year agreement with Citizen's Bank giving them the naming rights to their stadium.
