  • Zip Zabel, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs goes 18.1 IP for the 4-3 win in a 19 inning game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the longest relief appearance in major league history.

  • Joe Cronin, the player/manager for the Boston Red Sox becomes the first player to hit a pinch-hit home run in both games of a double header.

  • Eleven days after making his major league debut, Ossie Virgil, the first black player to play for the Detroit Tigers, goes 5-5 in his first home game at Briggs Stadium. He helps the Tigers beat the Washington Senators, 9-2.

  • Baseball owners vote in favor of expanding the playoffs and the divisions by a vote of 26-2. The new alignment, set to start in 1994 would feature 3 divisions in each league and allow 8 teams to make it to the playoffs in the format that we now know today.
  • Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy, the Masterton Trophy, and the Lester B. Pearson Award.

  • Former professional football star, O.J. Simpson drove his friend's white Ford Bronco across Los Angeles with police in pursuit and millions of people watching live on television. After the slow speed chase ended Simpson was arrested and charged with the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
