Biography[]

Julio Lugo (Julio Cesar Lugo) was born on November 16, 1975 in Barahona, Barahona (Dominican Republic). He made his Major League debut on April 15, 2000 for the Houston Astros. In 2000, his rookie year, he hit .283 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. Lugo played for the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of his 7 year career.

Most people believe that Julio Lugo's best season was 2005, when he stole 39 bases, hit for a .295 average and knocked in 57 runs.

Scouting Report[]

Lugo is just an all-around solid player. He can spray the ball all over the field, has decent on-base skills, he can steal a bag, bunt his way on, etc. He lacks power, though (career SLG: .402), a deficiency that should only get worse as Lugo gets older. Still, he makes a pretty good offensive contribution by way of his ability to hit for contact. Defensively, Lugo is inconsistent, alternating great plays with miscues on simple grounders, but his net contribution is usually average. The good news for Red Sox fans is that Lugo probably has at least two, if not three, more solid years in him.

Trivia[]

  • Julio Lugo is the brother of Major Leaguer Ruddy Lugo.
  • Lugo has received controversy in the Boston media regarding incessant crotch grabbing during games, including by ESPN's columnist Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons. It has even been suggested that local Red Sox network NESN attempts to only show him from above the waist to avoid TV embarrassment.
  • Lugo has both his career longest hitting streak of 14 games and his career longest hitless streak of 10 games in the 2007 season.
  • On April 30, 2003, Lugo was arrested and charged with assaulting his wife. Mabely Lugo had reported that Julio had hit her in the face and had then slammed her head against a car hood. Mabely Lugo was treated at a local hospital for injuries. His wife filed a restraining order but later rescinded it. Lugo was found not guilty of misdemeanor assault after his wife stated that she had exaggerated the story; despite the fact that she had signed a sworn statement to the contrary.
