A home run is a hit that allows the batter to touch all four bases and score a run. It typically involves the ball going over the fence in fair territory, but an inside-the-park home run is also a home run. Home runs are also called "homers" and are typically abbreviated "HR."
In today's modern era of baseball, the home run is the sexiest stat. "Chicks dig the longball". At least that's how the saying goes. The ball gets hit over the wall and the player goes all the way around the bases to score. It's the easiest and quickest way to score a run.
