Born on February 8, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, Fritz Peterson (Fred Ingles Peterson) played for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers over the course of his 11 year career. Peterson broke into the bigs on April 15, 1966 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 3.31 ERA in 215 innings pitched in 1966, his rookie year.
There is some disagreement on what was Fritz Peterson's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1970, when he posted a 2.90 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 127 batters. However, others believe that it was 1969, when he posted a 2.55 ERA, won 17 games and struck out 150 batters.
However, he is better remembered today for swapping families with fellow Yankees hurler Mike Kekich in 1973. Peterson and Kekich were inseparable friends and they decided that they would one day trade wives, children, and even dogs. This trade worked out better for Peterson than it did for Kekich as Peterson is still married to the former Susanne Kekich, while Kekich and Marilyn Peterson did not last long. Peterson's pitching abilities seem to have suffered after this "deal" and he was roundly booed in nearly every American League ballpark afterwards.
