Biography[]

Frank Robinson made his Major League debut with the Cincinnati Reds on April 17, 1956 against the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of 20. In his rookie season, he hit 38 homeruns which was an MLB rookie record at the time. He also scored 122 runs, drove in 83, and won the National League Rookie of the Year award.

His best year in Cincinnati (within the context of "team") was 1961. He hit .323, clubbed 37 home runs, scored 117, and drove in 124. The Reds advanced to the 1961 World Series, which they lost to the New York Yankees. After the season, Frank earned his first MVP Award.

His best year statistically in Cincinnati was 1962. That season, he hit .342 (2nd in the NL), belted 39 homers (3rd in the NL), and drove in 136 (also good for 3rd in the league). He led the league in six major offensive categories: runs (134), doubles (51), extra base hits (92), on-base pct (.421), slugging pct. (.624), and OPS (1.045). He finished 4th in MVP voting in 1962 - behind award winner Maury Wills, Willie Mays, and Tommy Davis.

After the 1965 season, Reds owner Bill DeWitt made the highly controversial decision to trade Frank to the Baltimore Orioles for Milt Pappas and others. see below for transaction details.

In 1966, as a Baltimore Oriole, Frank had an ultra-productive year. He hit .316 to lead the American League. He also led the AL in home runs (49) and RBI (122) on his way to earning the 1966 Triple Crown. In addition to the Triple Crown categories, Robinson also led the AL in on-base pct (.410), slugging pct. (.637), OPS (1.047), runs (122), total bases (367), extra base hits (85), and AB/HR (11.8). After the season, Frank became the first player to ever win the MVP award in both leagues. The dream season was capped by a World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Frank was named World Series MVP.

Frank Robinson and the Baltimore Orioles won the World Series again in 1970.

Managerial career[]

Frank Robinson became the first African-American manager in Major League Baseball when he served as player/manager for the Cleveland Indians in 1975. He served as the Indians' manager until 1977.

In 1981, Robinson was hired by the San Francisco Giants and managed the team until 1984.

From 1988 to 1991, he served as the manager of the Baltimore Orioles.

In 2002, Frank was hired by Major League Baseball to manage the Montreal Expos. When the team moved to the nation's capital and became the Washington Nationals, Frank went along as the manager.

In 1989, Robinson won the Manager of the Year Award while with the Baltimore Orioles after leading the team to a 87-75 record, a 33 game improvement over the previous season.

On April 20, 2006, Robinson won his 1,000th game as a manager, becoming the 53rd manager to reach that milestone.

After the end of the 2006 MLB regular season, Frank was let go as manager for the Washington Nationals. He is currently out of baseball.
