46 players of the 47 players on the Duke Lacrosse team were suspended pending investigation of allegations stemming from an incident at an off-campus party. The allegation, coming from an exotic dancer, was that she was raped, choked, and beaten by three men.
The alleged victim was African-American, while all three of her attackers have been identified as white, inflaming racial tensions on campus and in the surrounding community. Various demonstrations in Durham have occurred in recent days criticizing the University's handling of the case.
The highly-ranked team was 6-4, with five regular season games left; now it is unknown if they will be able to finish the season.
