The Rapids finished in 4th spot in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer and failed to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2008. They also failed to qualify for the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Team History

When Major League Soccer began operations in 1995 the Colorado Rapids were one of the original 10 franchises set to open the 1996 campaign. The official launch date of the franchise was October 17, 1995.

The Rapids first season proved to be a tough one. The club hired Bobby Houghton to lead the coaching staff. The club also signed some relatively high profile and well known players in Marcelo Balboa, Shaun Bartlett, Chris Woods, Chris Henderson, Dominic Kinnear, Steve Trittschuh and Roy Wegerle. The Rapids lost their first ever competitive fixture held on April 13, 1996 as they lost on the road to the Kansas City Wizards by a score of 3-0. The club opened at home on April 21, 1996. The match held at Denver's Mile High Stadium drew a crowd of 21,711 spectators. Balboa scored the club's first ever goal as the Rapids defeated the Dallas Burn 3-1. The run in to that first season did not go well as the Rapids lost nine of their final eleven games. The club eventually finished with a record of 11 wins and 21 losses and missed the playoffs by 10 points.
