After being outplayed on Saturday and embarrassed on their home ice the Boston Bruins came out looking to redeem themselves against the Carolina Hurricanes. However Carolina came out strong in the first and dug a hole for the Bruins that they could not climb out of.

The Hurricanes got to early goals from Andrew Ladd in the first period, one coming three minutes into the game and one coming three minutes later. The Bruins also felt the effects from their former rookie of the year Sergei Samsonov who scored a goal in the second period and picked up an assist on Andrew Ladd’s second goal.

In the third period Shawn Thorton decided that he was going to try and get his team a win. Thorton looked like he was on a mission when he scored two goals in a 27 second span. One at 14:50 of the final frame and one 27 seconds later at 15:17. The Bruins then kicked it in to high gear in the final minutes putting a lot of rubber in the direction of Cam Ward but Ward hung tough and stopped 32 of 34 shots he faced.

The Bruins blew their opportunity to score in the final minute after they pulled Alex Auld for an extra skater and captain Zdeno Chara took an elbowing penalty with 34 seconds to play and then Marc Savard took an interference penalty as the buzzer rang to signify the end of the game.

Shawn Thornton’s two goals were the first of his Bruins career and gave him his first two-goal game of his career.

The Bruins out shot the visitors 11-9 in the second period and 14-4 in the third after being out shot 10-9 in the first frame.

The Bruins are in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and the Hurricanes host Pittsburgh on Thursday.
