The 1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament was played through April 3, 1989. The Final Four took place in the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington. The University of Michigan, coached by Steve Fischer, won its first and only national championship to date.

Glen Rice averaged 33 minutes per game in the 1989 season for the Wolverines in 37 games averaging 25.6 points per game. He led the team in points (949), 3PT FG's made, attempted, and percentage (99, 192, 51.6%), FG's made and attempted (363, 629), and FT's made and percentage (124, 83.2%).
