  • February 2 - The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs is formed at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois; it will replace the disbanding National Association of Professional Baseball Players.
  • May 25 - The Philadelphia Athletics and Louisville Grays tie 2-2, the first tie in major league history.
  • June 14 - George Hall of the Philadelphia Athletics became the first major league player to hit for the cycle (a home run, a triple, a double, and a single in the same game).
  • July 15 - George Bradley of the St. Louis Brown Stockings pitches the first no-hitter in major league history against the Hartford Dark Blues.
  • October 23 - The statistic batting average is created by the Chicago Tribune.
